Eight Molars
Many of you know that poor Connor has been teething for the past four months (yes, that was four months). The poor kid will run a (high) fever (102+) for a week, his gums will get swollen, but the darn molars wouldn't break through. The teeth would go back down, and then we'd be at it again 4-6 weeks later. After the latest bout (about a week ago), I was determined to take him to the dentist the next time it happened and have him break the skin over the teeth for the poor guy. Well, low and behold, Dennis was tickling him today and looked in his mouth, and he had 8 (yes, 8) molars that had popped through (two on the top and two on the bottom on each side). No wonder the kid's been so miserable!!! I'm so glad they've at least broken the skin!

Lost
So, I don't write many posts just about myself, and by the title, you'd definitely think this was about one of my children; however, it's not.
My neighbor Rebecca and I decided to go cross-country skiing last night with Dennis' sister Alicia and her husband Jonathan. They had gone up at Aspen Grove on MLK Day, and they have night skiing from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for a really great price ($9 for the trail pass & equipment, $4 just for a trail pass). We decided it would be lots of fun, so after haggling sitters, our husbands, etc., Rebecca and I were off. We met Alicia and Jonathan at the Borders bookstore in the Riverwoods and then headed up the canyon. Unfortunately, when we got to Aspen Grove, they weren't open. I had skis, and Alicia let Rebecca borrow her skis so we could still go (since we were already out). They told us there was an easy lower loop and a more difficult upper loop that would just bring us right back to the lodge. Alicia and Jonathan showed us the trailhead, then they headed back to Provo and we headed out on the trail. We did the lower loop, but somehow cut into the upper loop and were back in what seemed like 15 or 20 minutes, so we decided to try our hand at the upper (slightly more difficult) loop. We had a marvelous time chatting and skiing and enjoying the peace and quiet and the gorgeous scenery and the stars. Wow! I forget how many stars you can see from up there.
Well, after about 2 1/2 hours, we thought we should be just about finished with the loop, but we weren't. We just kept looping around and around and we were turned around and weren't sure which way the lodge was. We both started to pray. Being a mom, I was carrying a small pack with water, carrots, trail mix, and granola, plus essentials like Kleenex, band-aids, etc. We also both had cell phones. We were pretty warm from all the skiing, so we weren't too worried, we just figured we had to orient ourselves and we'd be fine. Uh huh. Rebecca's husband, Dan had called, and she told him we were a little disoriented, but we could see the lights from the lodge and just needed to figure out how to get back there. We came upon a grooming machine and a sign that said "Sundance Nordic Center," but we thought certainly we couldn't have gone all the way down to Sundance. We hit a road, but were worried about walking it and not knowing which direction to go, so we headed back on the groomed trail, figuring it would "loop" us back around and we would be fine. Another hour passed, we were really praying (both individually, as well as several vocal prayers together). We called Alicia and Jonathan, who had been there before, and they got online to check out maps and figure out where we were. We kept talking to Dan and Alicia and the Lord. We couldn't talk for long, however, because our fingers would freeze, and it was hard to hold the phone and the flashlight and ski, and we wanted to keep moving to keep warm and to get back "quicker."
Alicia and Jonathan were giving us directions, and we ran into a guy out grooming the trails. It was about 11 p.m. He confirmed that we were indeed in Sundance and gave us directions back to Aspen Grove, but told us we had a good 30-45 minutes to get back. We can do this! He was a little creepy, so when he asked if we were okay, we said that we were. Rebecca had an impression to get his phone number, but he was already gone, so we skiied off in the direction he told us. Unfortunately, our flashlight batteries began to fail at this point, so we skiied in the dark, only flashing it on occasionally to confirm we were still on the trail he'd just groomed and (hopefully) heading in the right direction. We came to a big field and found ourselves skiing in circles. We called again, getting desperate this time. No one could believe where we were! We were smack in the middle of the Sundance cross-country ski trail system, and they couldn't really tell how to get us back (especially without a light). See map below:

Finally, Dan & Dennis got in touch with Sundance Security who radioed the man out grooming the trails who came to pick us up (we finally found a sign labeled 22, and practically sat down in front of it until he showed up to get us). We were thrilled to be rescued, but a little leery about the guy who picked us up. Rebecca was sure he was going to have his way with us. I was a little more confident since there were two of us, and I was carrying a pretty have mag light (which had been a pain skiing with, but I was sure grateful to have it then!). We were also texting and talking on the cell phone with our husbands, so he knew that a lot of people knew where we were and who we were with.
Anyway, he took us back to the Sundance Nordic Center where a Sundance Security officer was waiting to drive us back down to Aspen Grove and our car. I have never been so happy to see Rebecca's jeep before. We called everyone to let them know we were okay, then headed home. We pulled in just after 1 a.m. and gratefully crawled into bed not much worse for the wear. We were so blessed.
Things we were so grateful for last night:
1. It was freezing cold (between 9 & 12 degrees), but we were moving and warm. If you're wondering about how cold that was, the water bottle I was carrying in the bag against my body was almost completely frozen. When we pulled our hands out of our gloves to dial or answer our cell phones, they would instantly start prickling and then go numb.
2. It was not snowing, nor was there a cold wind blowing (it was really pretty still last night).
3. Exercise--we've both been working out faithfully, so we were and pretty good shape, and not even that tired, which was wonderful. Neither of us is too sore this morning (my neck is a little sore from carrying the pack, and Rebecca has some bruises from a few falls, but all in all, we're in good shape).
4. Cell phones--we stayed on the groomed trails, and had bars most of the time, so we knew if all else failed we could call 911 or search and rescue or something.
5. A guy out grooming the trails--he only grooms the trails occasionally, and we were so blessed that it was last night. Also, the security guy didn't even know they were on the same radio frequency--we were blessed he figured it out and was able to get ahold of him.
6. Alicia & Jonathan--we have been looking at the trail maps this morning, and we have no idea how you were reading them so well to tell us where to go, thank you!!!
7. Husbands who called and found someone to rescue us and helped keep us calm.
8. PRAYER--it works. I know there are billions of people on the planet, and so many having different problems at the same time, yet the Lord is aware of each of us individually and our needs, and he sent angels to watch over us last night and we will be eternally grateful.
In the end, we skiied for just over 5 hours and about 20 miles (Sundance has over 14 miles of trails that we skiied at least once, if not two and three times, plus we skiied all of Aspen Grove and the distance in between the two). I am so glad to be back home with my family in one piece (and poor Rebecca will survive the bruises from a few falls on the trail). Thanks for a fun, exciting evening that I have no desire to repeat again, ever. However, I still plan to treat you to a root beer float at Sonic! :)

UNO
Aspen has really gotten into UNO lately (she especially likes to WIN at UNO, surprise), and Devin loves to play as well. They were both trying to get out of cleaning up after dinner today (which was fine, because sometimes it is faster alone), so this was the conversation I heard:
Devin: "Hey Aspen, wanna play UNO?"
Aspen: "Sure."
Devin: "C'mon."
Aspen: "But can you let me win this time?"
She catches on to some things way too quickly.

Congratulations!!!
Congratulations Seth! Just want to send a shout out to my little bro. who got engaged tonight to Marian. Are they a cute couple or what?

Watch for the details on Seth's blog (what I know: June, Mt. Timp., navy blue/silver). Love you bud!

Feeling Old
After spending Wednesday night with quadratric equations (yes, I can tell you how to find the y-intercepts, x-intercepts, vertex, and line of symmetry--and so can Shaylee because she passed her test), Shaylee and I spent Thursday at an open house for the new high school she will attend next year. YIKES! I know she's been in high school, technically, this year, but it seems more real when they're actually attending the high school. We attended breakout sessions on registration, planning your schedule, a new study skills class they're offering, the ACT, scholarships, etc. I am not ready for this. Shaylee, on the other hand, is taking it like a pro. She's looking at her schedule and the credits she needs, and trying to figure out how to get the most out of her high school experience while preparing herself for college. You go girl! We've discussed job possibilities (both short-term and long-term career options), colleges, majors, etc. She is one on-the-ball kid. She is also trying out for the drill and dance teams (wants drill more, but decided to keep her options open), and is excited to get involved in some clubs, etc. for leadership experience. I know she's gonna be great, and hopefully I'll feel more like a pro when I get around to Devin, Aspen, and Connor. Sorry Shay! Sometimes it's rough to be the guinea pig (trust me, I know).

My Man
So I just have to say, that I have the most wonderful husband in the world. He loves me unconditionally, and believes in me when I don't even believe in myself. He thinks I am the greatest wife and mother in all the world, regardless of my shortcomings. He comes home from work and "engages." He is happy to help with the kids or help with dinner if it's not done, or whatever is needed. He takes care of any "kid problems" that occur between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. When he cleans, he cleans (moves fridges, couches, cleans carpets, empties the garage, etc.). On top of all that, he provides for the temporal and spiritual needs of our family. I could not ask for a more perfect match! I love you sweetheart!
Aspen Quips
Okay, so I've got to post this one. The other day I walked in on Aspen in the bathroom. Why? Because I had no idea she was in there--the lights were out. "Why are you going to the bathroom with the lights out?" I asked her. "Mom," she patiently explained, "I'm saving electricity." Good girl. Next time, choose the bathroom with the window, in the daytime, when you want to save electricity.
Also, an update on my "parenting backfire" from a few posts ago. I decided that rather than giving her the box of toys back on Friday I would make her earn them back. Every day she keeps her room clean she gets one item out of the box. Her room hasn't been this clean (consistently) since before she could crawl!

So it's been a little while--we've had one of those weeks. Connor started it by running a high fever. We figured it was just his teeth. He's been teething once every 6 weeks for the last 4 months (molars). He runs a fever, his gums get red and swollen, but the darn molars never breakthrough. Poor guy! Anyway, the fever continued until Wednesday, when, while eating lunch, his lips and fingertips turned blue! YIKES! I ran him to the doctor, but they just said he had a virus and I have to wait it out. Grrr.
Friday night, Dennis and I went out on our weekly date (to Costco, of all places, where we shared a slice of pizza and a churro after shopping, then on to the dollar theater to see Madagascar 2--not my first choice, but it was that or High School Musical 3, and it's what we could afford), and came home to find Aspen in bed with eyes puffed and swollen and a fever. Allergies? Who knows. Benadryl and Tylenol and she slept off and on through the night. Dennis and I really haven't slept much all week.
We traded off at church today (I gave Dennis the option of leading the music in sacrament meeting or teaching Primary--he readily opted for teaching Primary--Sunbeams, no less), and then he took the older kids to Grandma Brown's farm to celebrate her birthday (Happy Birthday Mom!) while I hung here with the sickies.
Anyway, a few pics that I haven't posted in the last little while.
Devin started basketball this week. They had a hard time finding a coach, so I offered to coach(with the caveat that I only know about front yard basketball and know nothing about coaching), but luckily they found someone else who knows something about basketball and coaching. Anyway, he's doing a great job. They only lost their first game and Devin scored 8 of the 14 points. Go Dev! Sorry the pics aren't great (I was using my small purse-size camera with the delay). Devin is #11:

Even sick, Aspen felt well enough to bake and decorate a cake for her dad using the baking set Grandma Brown gave her for her birthday last year.
Didn't she do a great job?
The other night we played a rousing game of twister:
I think Aspen wins for the twistiest postion:

I found this web site through my friend Angela and had to try for this giveaway. They are giving away a Bumbleride Indie Twin Stroller.

Cool, huh? Just go to the web site http://inevergrewup.net/ and you can enter to win too! It's super easy. Good Luck!
Since poor Aspen & Connor have to share a stroller when I take them out alone (basically sitting on top of one another), it would be awesome to win this! Talk about Merry Christmas (or happy birthday, or whatever else you might want to insert here).
It's a smooth ride, turns well, and can be used a jogging stroller. You can also adjust each side separately with plenty of cargo space underneath. Besides that, it's my favorite color. What's not to love?

Parenting Backfire
My little three-year old is too smart for her own good sometimes. I asked her to clean up her room (which was an absolute disaster) before dinner. The penalty? Anything left out mom gets until the end of the week. I was cooking dinner while she went in to clean. She went in, took one look at the mess, came back out and calmly told me, "You can have it. How long do you need it? Can I have it back on Friday?" WHAT!?! Well, when I went in with the box to take it she freaked a little and started hauling stuff she really wanted to put it away. I did end up with her new Belle doll, and she's not happy, but she's waiting it out until Friday like a trooper.
Another sad Aspen moment . . . she dressed up Tuesday in her princess outfit and informed me that she was waiting for her dad to come home and be her prince and dance with her. Little did I know, Dennis forgot to tell me about an evening appointment and he wouldn't be home until after 10 p.m. YIKES! She spent the evening in her gown waiting for her prince. Luckily, last night he was home at 8:30 p.m. and I had her get up, put on her gown, and dance with her handsome prince (while a proud mom watched on with tears in her eyes and sang, "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream.").
Other Aspen greats . . . she has this funny idea that she's going to grow up, marry her dad, and then get to sleep with him in the "big" bed--our children do not sleep with us. Anyway, the other night she was explaining this to Dennis who told her he hoped she would grow up and marry someone nice. She promptly responded, "Right, not someone who kills people." Good distinction Aspen.

Princess Aspen
Today Aspen got decked out in the princess dress & crown Grandma Pearson gave her for Christmas. We were playing dolls in her room with the door closed & the space heater on, but after getting dressed up, she decided she wanted to dance with me. "You be the prince," she proclaimed. Okay. So I got up to dance with her. "No, in the living room," she said, then she stood in front of her bedroom door looking at me expectantly. "Well, open it," she said, "you're the prince." Someone taught her well. :)

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! We decided to ring it in right with a fun party with a few of our neighbors (of course, we were having so much fun we didn't take any pictures!). We had the Dolan's & the McGarry's over for a night of good food, great company, and wild games. Shaylee also invited a couple of friends over, but they were in and out. Some of the yummy food included 7-layer dip, Junction City dip, spinach-artichoke dip, tomato/mozarella/french bread appetizers, fresh french bread, and eclair cake. We spent the evening playing Mafia, and then those with small children went home to put them to bed while the older kids hung around for a movie & then toasted in the new year with the ball dropping in NYC & good old Martinelli's sparkling grape juice. The boys then ran around the block banging pots & pans before heading home & hitting the sack. Good 'ol Connor went to bed at 7:30 p.m. and literally slept through it all.
After a lazy morning (who wouldn't be tired after an evening like that?), we decided the weather was perfect for sledding (it was so good, that I even let Connor brave the cold for his first winter outing--he loved it!). That boy is going to be a sledding kamikaze. I hope I don't pay for today with another round of RSV, but check out the great pics we got!
We rounded out the day with Devin & I making homemade pizza for everyone, then snuggling up with popcorn to watch Back to the Future, Part II. Happy New Year everyone! May 2009 find you meeting your goals and fulfilling your dreams and wishes.

Fun Memories
We really enjoyed our Christmas Break together. It's been so wonderful to have the kids out of school and to spend quality family time together. We enjoyed making (graham cracker) gingerbread houses together. Then, on Christmas Day, we headed down to Grandpa & Grandma Brown's farm for some much-needed R&R. We enjoyed the big sledding hill Dennis built for us, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
